Chairman off to Sierra Leone

Nigel Hyde is to visit TWO's project teams and communities in Sierra Leone this month.  One of these is the United Polio Brothers an association of 95 people, mostly men who are afflicted by polio, some living with severe physical problems.  Led by Chairman Paul Kabia and Secretary Alia Korama, the association owns around an acre of land on the site of a disused abattoir in Kissy, Freetown, which was donated by the Sierra Leoneon Government in 2000.

The community is in need of improved water supplies and toilet facilities, and additional living space would enable the community to invite more people in. The Association has an active vocational training school, undertaking pig farming, tailoring and tie-dye, blacksmithing, goldsmith work and art.  Living conditions are at subsistence level only. Nigel said “Our teams will be able to make a significant impact on the lives of the people at this remarkable community.  In return, our teams will learn much”.

Europeans Lead in Accountability

According to AccountAbility and csrnetwork, the top ranked company in the world for accountability is BP.  Overall, European headquartered companies accounted for 18 of the 20 top places in their 2007 survey, with Barclays, ENI, HSBC and Vodafone completing the top five places along with BP.  The survey assesses the top 100 companies in the world for their reported social and environmental performance judged against criteria covering strategy, governance, engagement and impact.
